My cake decorating skills came about since I do not like Christmas cake (or mince pies, or Christmas pudding, oh dear). So every year if I want a piece of Christmas cake I have to make my own sponge with jam and butter cream and decorate it, since you cant have a plain cake at Christmas.
My skills are also partially inherited from my Grandma who was a cake decorator by profession for a while, at least for friends and family.
However my Grandma never did what I do which is make little figures out of marzipan. You guess the basic amounts of each colour you're going to need and them dye them with food colouring. This means you have to use white icing! (just incase you want to try for yourself, if anyone ever even looks at this webpage!)
You then shape the figures with your hands. I usually get my ideas from pictures on Christmas cards, but not always.
Penguin cake, Polar cake, Puppy cake, Bunny cake, Santa cake.
Because my Grandma liked what I did with my Christmas cakes, she asked me to decorate her 50th wedding anniversary cake. OK, we cheated in that the cakes were actually bought - ready iced. But my Mom decorated them and put them together, and I made some frogs!
